The experience

Everyday Lives is a documentary journey through people, place and the ordinary moments that make a place human. Photography remains at its centre. Moving image, narration, ambient sound, music and silence are used selectively to deepen the experience without overwhelming the photographs.
India is where the journey begins. In Varanasi, the viewer moves from the Ganges to the ghats and into the narrow lanes of the city, encountering work, prayer, play, ritual, conversation and the unexpected moments that appear along the way.
Beneath the journey is a growing documentary archive. Each photograph can lead to deeper records, provenance, cultural context and research, allowing visitors to experience the work simply or explore as deeply as they wish.
The ambition is not merely to show where these photographs were made. It is, for a little while, to make you feel that you are there.
Founding journey
Journey Through India
India is the first major documentary world within Everyday Lives. Varanasi is the first place to receive the full treatment: photographs deliberately sequenced with narration, sound, moving image and deeper contextual layers to create an immersive documentary journey. Other places in India will follow as their material reaches the same curatorial standard.

Brian Silver is a Canadian documentary photographer and founder of the Everyday Lives Documentary Archive. India is the first major body of work within a long-term archive concerned with people, place and everyday life.

Everyday Lives Journal
A photography-led international journal is being developed around documentary images, encounters and informed local voices. The Journal is collaborative by design and is not intended as a showcase for a single photographer.
