Space to look
Not every documentary photograph needs to deliver maximum activity. Quiet images are important because they change the viewer’s pace and restore the physical scale of the river.
From the water, the density of the city falls away. Boat, figure and reflected light occupy a much larger field than they would on the steps.
On land, stillness can come from isolation rather than distance. The orange sari is visually distinct, but the surrounding stone remains deliberately spacious.
These quieter photographs are not pauses outside the documentary story. They are part of its rhythm: a reminder that observation includes waiting as well as encounter.
