Pushkar: Pilgrimage, Lake and Fair

A sacred lake and pilgrimage town

Pushkar is centred on a lake regarded as sacred in Hindu traditions and is especially associated with Brahma. Ghats, temples and ritual bathing shape the town’s religious geography. As in Varanasi, the waterfront is both built environment and place of continuing practice.

The fair and its many audiences

The annual Pushkar fair is known for livestock trading, pilgrimage, markets, performance and tourism. These activities overlap but should not be treated as one event with one meaning. For some participants it is principally religious; for others it is commercial, social or occupational.

Rajasthan beyond palaces

Pushkar provides a different view of Rajasthan from the great fort cities. Temporary camps, traders, animals, pilgrims, vendors and visitors create a changing public landscape that can be especially important to documentary photography.

Documentary caution

Photographs of dress, turbans, jewellery or ritual should be captioned from verified observation. Clothing can carry regional or community associations, but appearance alone is not sufficient evidence for caste, religion or precise ethnic identity.
